Are Workplace Stressors Zapping Your Energy? Here’s What To Do!
Workplace stressors can be debilitating! A good friend of mine shared something worrisome with me recently. She said that when her alarm clock goes off each morning, she dreads waking up to go to work. The workplace stressors she has to face everyday have become more than she can bear. The thought of having to go in to a job that she hates causes an immense amount of stress long before she arrives at the office. How about you? When your alarm clock goes off in the morning, do you dread getting out of bed? Do you dread going in to work? Do you wish you could crawl back under the covers and stay there all day? That could be the ultimate sign that your workplace stress is taking a serious toll on your mental and emotional well-being.
Workplace Stressors Can Trigger Depression & Anxiety
High levels of stress in the workplace is a common factor for many women who suffer from depression and anxiety. Workplace stressors exist in many forms – perhaps you simply can’t get along with your co-workers, or perhaps your demanding boss refuses to approve your vacation time when you really need it. The constant threat of down-sizing and job-loss is another stress-causing factor in the workplace. Or maybe you have to put up with sexual harassment in your work environment. One of my biggest workplace stress factors was extreme work overload. The never ending flow of work, the constant demands for higher productivity, and the constant pressure to meet deadlines imposed by clients was enough to send my stress numbers to dangerous levels, with negative effects on my health and on my relationships.
You see, when you’re stressed at or about work, it often spills over into your personal life. As much as you may like to, you can’t tell the boss your thoughts, so you come home and take it out on the people you love. You may snap at the kids, and fight with your husband, when the REAL problem is your job.
Are YOU Following Your Dreams?
Workplace stressors can also take a toll on you when you are not following your dreams. Perhaps your degree is in Science but you’re stuck in a classroom as a substitute teacher letting the kids watch a boring movie rather than focusing on what your initial goals were in life. No wonder you feel stressed at the mere idea of going to work. Being dissatisfied in your job is at the top of the list of workplace stressors that can cause a great deal of stress in your life. And the work-related stress problems easily spill over to other areas of your life as well. It’s a proven fact that job stress contributes to serious health problems such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and obesity. Just to name a few.
If your stress at work is a growing issue for you try the following: - Focus on time management and organizational skills to handle your workload
- Try developing a positive outlook on life and focus on the good things about your job
- Learn to let go of small irritants that you encounter throughout the work day
- Look for at least one (1) positive and commendable attribute in your colleagues and boss
- Work on an exit plan. Carefully plan how and when to leave the job.
You may not be able to quit your job tomorrow but working on your exit plan can be an empowering and stress-reducing activity. Workplace stressors can be challenging, but when you identify the sources of your stress in the workplace, you can take steps to deal with it. Job stress does not have to control you, unless you let it.
